Installing a Reticulation/Irrigation System at Your Residential or Commercial Property?

In WA, it is a legal requirement that only a licensed Plumber is engaged to install a reticulation ‘cut-in’. A ‘cut-in’ is where the reticulation system is connected to the mains water supply provided by the Water Corporation. To ensure optimal water pressure and maximise the performance and longevity of the retic system, whilst also protecting the water supply from potential contamination, the cut-in should be performed by an experienced professional, allowing for appropriate spacing from the water meter.

At K & K Plumbing, we are the experts in supplying and installing retic cut-ins and use only top quality valves and fittings to ensure our customers receive the highest standards of workmanship.

With all our retic cut-ins, we install dual check, non-return (backflow prevention) valves. This ensures water cannot flow back from the reticulation system into the mains water. This valve is a legal requirement from the Water Corporation for all new reticulation installations across both residential and commercial properties.

As part of every retic cut-in, we also install an emergency isolation tap before the dual check valve. This is a manual tap that enables shut-off of the water supply to the reticulation without cutting water to the rest of the property

At some properties, there is no easy access to the water meter. As experienced retic cut-in specialists however, K & K Plumbing can run a line from an existing tap and install the cut-in with dual check valve off the tap itself or in another acceptable location.

Retic cut-ins can vary in size and will depend on the individual characteristics of the property, water pressure and type of reticulation system. For Residential Properties, the standard cut-in is usually a 20mm ball valve with 25mm check valve (backflow prevention). K & K Plumbing use only Rye Metal valves which allow for maximum pressure and water flow.

Where cut-ins are required for commercially rated properties or high risk zones, a RPZ (reduced pressure zone) fitting is used. If the property is risk rated medium then a double check valve can be used as an alternative to the RPZ. Whenever an RPZ rated cut-in is installed, it needs to be tested by a licenced Plumber with a specialised ‘backflow testing’ qualification. By law, all RPZ devices must be backflow tested upon installation, following any maintenance work and at least every twelve months. RPZ fittings also vary in size and the required parts will depend on the nature of the commercial property and its operations.

Regular backflow prevention device testing is not only necessary to ensure the proper performance of the device and, therefore, adequate protection of the fresh water supply from potentially harmful contaminants, it is also a legislative requirement. All backflow prevention devices must be tested by a fully licensed Plumber at the time of installation, following any maintenance work and at least every twelve months.
